22 WAYS

YOU CAN SERVE

THE POOR, ORPHANS, AND WIDOWS

(most for under ten hours a month)

Category I: By yourself

  1. Adopt a widow/shut-in. They can need help with everything from paying bills, fixing things, and transportation. They also just need companionship.

  2. Buy a copy of Hard Times. For some people, this is the only work they can do, and all of your dollar goes to the person.

  3. Buy a meal for a street person. If you don't want to give cash, then invest a little of your time into someone's life by taking them out to eat. You'll be blessed more than he/she is.

  4. Lead a Bible study. Places like Shockoe Hill Apartments or New Clay House are clean and safe, but full of disabled, elderly, and formerly homeless people who get ignored by society.

  5. Adopt through Children’s Resources International or become a foster parent.

  6. Hire mentally handicapped individuals to do odd jobs through the Daily Planet.

  7. Get your car fixed at the Good Samaritan Inn.

Category II: Volunteering at a local ministry

  1. Minister to women. Crisis Pregnancy Center and WEBA are  good examples.

  2. Be a tutor. Charity Mission and the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club always need helpers.

  3. Help prisoners/inmates. Prison Fellowshi, and Glory to God Ministries can show you how to work with and witness to offenders and help them after they get out.

  4. Adopt a family from Gilpin Court through STEP (Strategies to Elevate People).

  5. Build a house through Habitat for Humanity

  6. Help immigrants adjust to their new home through Language Mission or Russian Immigration Services.

Category III: Through work:

  1. Provide job placement in cooperation with STEP

  2. Create internships for mature high school students through KEISHA Ministries.

Category IV: Get your church to:

  1. Host CARITAS once a year. This is a great opportunity for ministry and evangelism.

  2. Participate in Jesus Day.

  3. Start a new church in cooperation with Multi-Housing Ministries.

  4. Adopt a family on welfare through Richmond Department of Social Services

  5. Have a day care program for low-income kids.

  6. Teach Growing Kids God's Way in a low-income neighborhood center or church.

  7. Feed the homeless one evening at the Daily Planet.
